CHIRP CHIRP! by Cal Elshoff & Carrie Ramoz Tetherow’s resident bird and Audubon expert Cal Elshoff performed his annual Christmas bird count at Tetherow and discovered a hearty flock of 25 Red Crossbills. The Red Crossbill is a stocky finch of mature coniferous forests; the Red Crossbill is dependent on the seed cones, which are its main food. Its peculiar bill allows it access to the seeds, and it will breed whenever it finds areas with an abundance of cones. In preparation for spring, Cal cleaned out all nesting boxes around the property and covered the Lewis Woodpecker nesting boxes with bark.
