Coming this Season at Tetherow: An (Even More) Firm and Fast Course

Players might notice their drives go farther this year By McKenna Brown   Members and resort guests who head out to the course this month will be relieved to find that it’s more or less exactly how they left it in the fall. “The golf course is in the same condition as it was when they left it,” says Golf Course Superintendent Chris Condon. “There’s nothing new, no surprises, everything’s normal.” Condon and his crew spent most of March readying the course for the March 31 opening. They laid out a layer of gypsum fertilizer over the course and are working on fully incorporating it into the grass. “We’re trying to get that to disappear,” Condon says. He said players might notice… Read More

The Secrets of the Course: Why Tetherow Closes for the Winter

‘We want to be the best we can be as soon as we can be’ By McKenna Brown   At the beginning of our very mild November, we heard some grumbles from Members that the course had closed too early. If it’s still sunny, shouldn’t we be able to play? It’s not quite that simple, though, as Course Maintenance Supervisor Chris Condon explained. There are many tasks that must be completed before winter hits full force, and those tasks take time. The comfort stations sprinkled throughout the course must be cleaned and shut down, of course, as do The Turn and The Revolving Dog. The course maintenance staff must also cover and secure the bunkers on the course, or else winter… Read More

Golf Season Wrapping Up With Cross Country Golf Day

The first weekend in November marks the end of golf — for now By Nathaniel Kitt   It is truly hard to believe that we only have a few more days of golfing at Tetherow in 2016. But it is the situation we find ourselves in. With that being said, let’s make the very best of what is still here for us. The weather is looking seasonal, and the course is playing wonderfully still! With this past weekend’s inaugural Death Row in the history books and our annual Cross Country Golf day upcoming, there are quite literally still hundreds of golfers taking advantage of playing opportunities! About a month ago, two members emailed me with the subject line, “Death row… Read More

There’s Still Plenty of Golf Left to Play at Tetherow

The season may be winding down, but exciting golf events remain on the horizon. By Nathaniel Kitt   The leaves have fallen and the nights are cooler. Welcome to October in the High Desert! Although snow might start flurrying at higher elevations, there is still plenty of golf left to be played this autumn. Hopefully, one or more of the upcoming golf events entices you to come on out and enjoy the course a few more times. October 4th marked the second annual Breast Cancer Awareness golf event. In a simple effort to raise awareness and support those currently or having previously fought breast cancer, we played nine holes, had lunch and enjoyed a great day of camaraderie. The ever-popular… Read More

‘Renaturalizing’ Tetherow: How the Golf Course Got Its Look

A lot of work went into making the grounds look so believable By McKenna Brown   You’d be forgiven if you looked out at Tetherow’s golf course and assumed the many fairways and greens had simply been carved out of the natural landscape. In reality, nearly every plant, tree and rock you see has been carefully “re-naturalized” by Tetherow’s course maintenance crew. “It’s a little more difficult than it looks,” Golf Course Superintendent Chris Condon said. “Mother Nature has its way of doing things. We wanted to make sure it was believable, we wanted to make sure that it fit in the whole design of the golf course, and we wanted to utilize as much native plant material as possible… Read More

Ideal Conditions + An Excited Membership = A Great Kickoff to the Golf Season

“We are gearing up for the Ceilidh – the ladies member/guest tournament – which starts today and ends Sunday.” By Jake Edwards, PGA It has been an exciting start to the season here at Tetherow, and we are all looking forward to one of our best seasons yet. The golf course is in beautiful shape and everybody is so excited that the pool is open. The membership enjoyed some fun events in June with the ladies playing their first major Member/ Member tournament. It was a thrilling finish as we had our first aggregate putt-off, in honor of the US Open, to decide the 2016 net champion. Roxie Mills and Heidi Kjos hit two fabulous putts to narrowly defeat Paula Sansburn… Read More

Work also continues on #5 throughout the winter. by Chris Condon The season is over and now we all can take a breather and think about the winter.  Hopefully you can take a vacation to your favorite sunny spot.  Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner, which is always exciting.  One thing that always makes the holiday season better is snow.  I hope that we receive an abundance of snow both in the mountains and in town, especially during the holidays.  As we wait for the snow to fly, the golf course maintenance staff will be involved with some minor and major projects. You are probably asking yourself, what will have changed that I can look forward to next… Read More

2015 – A Legendary Golf Year in Review

By Nate Kitt, Assistant Golf Professional, PGA There is no doubt that this past year was one for the golf history books. Both here at Tetherow and in the general world of golf, memories were made and records were broken. The purpose for me writing this account is simply a recollection and a reflection about where were are and where we can go in the future. Golf season in Central Oregon came earlier than most planned for (including most area golf facilities) as the weather conditions might have resembled more of late spring than of late winter. I recall playing in short sleeves at Brasada Ranch in mid-January and most every member that I spoke with got in some winter… Read More

Reworking Tetherow Hole #17

Reworking Hole #17 The golf construction of Tetherow was started in the spring on 2006. I was fortunate to travel to Scotland and look at the construction of the Castle Course at St. Andrews that David McLay Kidd was building. Chris van der Velde and I met David on site while David was meeting with several American reporters doing a story on the Castle Course. I will never forget the response from David to a reporter’s question on which hole will be the signature hole. I am paraphrasing David’s response: “Why would I design and build one great hole and seventeen mediocre or poor golf holes. My intent is to not design one great hole, I look it as, the… Read More

GolfBoards Arrive at Tetherow

“SURF THE EARTH” at Tetherow with the new fleet of GolfBoards The Wave of GolfBoards Across the Country Begins at Tetherow Not a skateboard or a golf cart, Tetherow Golf Club in Bend, Oregon, introduces a new adrenalin-pumping mode of transportation around the golf course, the Golfboard. Tetherow is the first golf course in the country to host a fleet of twenty Golfboards at the resort. Golfing with a GolfBoard, or “GolfBoarding” as they like to call it, changes the golfing experience, without changing the game of golf. The ancient game and all its’ traditions are safe. Traversing from shot to shot across the golf course, however, has now taken on a whole new dimension of fun, action, and excitement… Read More

Conditions Update & Our Annual Poa-Pulling Party

Having fun and bringing the greens back to their full glory. by Chris Condon, Director of Agronomy Thank you to all of those who attended the Poa picking party.  We had a great time and actually picked a lot of Poa annua from the greens on #1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.  A third of the golf course greens have less Poa annua than before and we owe it all to our dedicated members. We are having another Poa Party on Mon, Sept 8 and hope you can join us! I also want to thank all of our members, guests and employees for being patient while we deal with the circumstances surrounding our putting surfaces.  My staff and I really appreciate your support while we… Read More

2014 Ceilidh: Ladies Invitational Results

by Nate Kitt, Asst. Head Professional The Ceilidh: Tetherow’s toughest event to pronounce. Many might try “See-Lid,” but I have a sneaking suspicion that few would know the actual enunciation of “Kay-Lee.” This Gaelic term means “party” and the events that transpired Thursday night could not have represented a “Ceilidh” any better. The festivities kicked off with a cocktail hour followed by a Par 3 Social. What does that mean, one might ask. Let me tell you, if this part of the event doesn’t having you coming back year after year, then I don’t know what will. With gambling specialist Kelly Wechter on hand, we decided to facilitate a special kind of “Five Card Draw,” in which on every hole the participants would… Read More

2014 Burning Bush: Mens Golf Invitational Results

Congratulations to overall winners Ian McLean & Troy Johnston by Nate Kitt, Asst. Golf Professional Burning Bush is undoubtedly the premier member event at Tetherow year in and year out.  This 2014 Men’s Invitational did not fail to impress anyone in the field with fierce competition and great camaraderie fuelled by the vibrant Tetherow culture.  The golf tournament was just the start of the festivities with a skills challenge including a penalty kick, putting course and “flop wall” on Thursday night and a Par 3 Tournament on Friday and Saturday nights.  The record number of 134 participants divided the field into 12 flights.  After five 9-hole (sometimes laborious) matches, the victors of each flight emerged.  Some flights were closer than… Read More

Bringing the Course Back to Pristine Condition

Help up eradicate the Poa on July 28 – we’ll supply the beverages! by Chris Condon, Director of Agronomy It has been a little more than a month from the herbicide application for Poa annua.  And that is in the past and the future is to solve the problem and get back to a great golf course.  We are working as quickly as possible with a plan to cure the unsightly areas on our greens. You have probably already noticed that we have done some over seeding and sod work on the severely damaged areas. The plan and the work will take some time so please help us in our efforts and think positively. The biggest thing that we can do or… Read More
