The brand-new product recently won accolades at a natural products expo in Baltimore

Tetherow Managing Partner Chris van der Velde remembers watching surf legend Laird Hamilton scoop red palm oil, coconut milk powder, coconut oil and espresso into his Vitamix before heading out for a day of surfing or paddleboarding in Hawaii.

superfoodLaird’s Superfood Creamer has come a long way from those days in the Vitamix. The streamlined, powdered product launched last month in Baltimore at the 31st Annual Natural Products Expo East, where it was a runner-up for the Best of East Press Award.

“This new product is way better than the original,” van der Velde said. “In the Vitamix they were throwing in the oils, the palm oil, the cocoa butter, and because of all the oils it left kind of a film in your mouth. But in this version the oils are dehydrated, so it tastes better.”

Tetherow will soon begin carrying the superfood creamer and coconut sugar in its hotel rooms and in The Grill, along with the brand’s Peruvian coffee, which it already carries. Fourteen-ounce bags of the Peruvian coffee will also be available for purchase in the Guest Services Building.

Laird began making an early version of the superfood creamer in his garage about 10 years ago. He had long embraced coffee as a part of his active lifestyle, but his interest in nutrition led him to tinker with a recipe for a healthy version of coffee creamer. Laird knew he had something special, and it didn’t take long for him to turn his pet project into a full-fledged company.

The Laird Superfood Creamer contains organic coconut milk powder, organic coconut sugar, organic red palm oil and organic extra virgin coconut oil. The secret ingredient is Aquamin, which is derived from 100 percent seaweed and provides bioactive calcium, magnesium and 72 other trace minerals without affecting the taste of the creamer. Aquamin was recently named the Ingredient of the Year in the Healthy Aging category at the annual NutraIngredients Awards in Geneva.

Perhaps the best part of the new products? They’re local! The company is based in Sisters and produces its line of products on-site. Tetherow will be the first place to offer the new creamer and coconut sugar, and The Grill staff is already excited to make the new Superfood latte, available soon. Some Tetherow staff are even planning on swapping their normal coffee order for it!

“I think Tetherow has always been a little bit cutting edge, like with the GolfBoards,” van der Velde said. “I thought GolfBoards were a better form of transportation for golf. I love coffee, and I think this is a healthier way of getting it in your system. And it tastes good!”
