Tetherow and Pacific Crest Middle School partnering to raise money for 2-year-old Lucy, who has cystic fibrosis

All of us here at Tetherow are so excited to once again sponsor a Sparrow child this year! Sparrow Club is a fantastic organization that started here in Bend. It provides financial and emotional support for children in our community with extreme medical need.
Tetherow and Pacific Crest Middle School will work together this year to raise money for Lucy, a fiercely adorable 2-year-old with cystic fibrosis. Here’s what Sparrow says about her:
“Lucy is a beautiful little girl with a smile that will light up a room. When Lucy was born, she was very sick and needed care in the NICU. That is where she was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, which is a progressive life-threatening disease of the lung and digestive system. After a month in the NICU Lucy spent her second month at Doernbecher’s Children’s Hospital. Lucy struggled to gain weight and had a serious lung infection.
“Lucy has advanced lung disease and is feeding tube dependent. She takes special enzymes to help her absorb her formula. Her feeding pump runs 18 hours a day. When Lucy is not sick she spends 1 hour and 20 minutes, two times a day, doing breathing treatments and airway clearance therapy. When she’s sick she does this treatment four times a day. At times, Lucy needs to go to Doernbecher’s for IV antibiotics. She also makes trips to Portland for doctor visits every two months and is usually very worn out by the time she gets back home.
“Lucy needs special care throughout the day and night. Until there is a cure for cystic fibrosis, Lucy will never have the typical life that we all take for granted. This does not stop her from being a very busy toddler. She learned to walk wearing a backpack that holds her feeding pump. Even her siblings have trouble keeping up with her.
“She’s a typical toddler who wants to play outdoors, but she can’t play in the dirt, puddles or in some pools or lakes due to bacteria that could harm her lungs. At not quite 2 years old, this is hard for her to understand. She doesn’t know that normal child’s play could be extremely dangerous for her.
“Although Lucy has endured many challenge, she is a happy, fun-loving little girl who loves monkeys, owls, and watching Thomas the Train movies during her breathing treatments. Lucy also loves being outside. She likes to look and listen for birds and see the river, and she gets very excited when the wind blows. Lucy also loves music and dances and sings whenever she hears her favorite songs.
“Sparrow Cash raised for Lucy will help with ongoing medical expenses, travel to Portland, building a cystic fibrosis-friendly outdoor play area and everyday living expenses for her family.”
Besides Tetherow’s sponsorship, our pub-style restaurant The Row will also have a dedicated keg whose proceeds will go directly to Lucy. Last year we raised over $1,100 just through beer sales; we’d love to top that this year!
