The Bend Quail Trail – Helping Baby Birds Every Spring

The Cox family creates tiny steps near Tetherow curbs to aid struggling baby quail. by Yoko Minoura If a career as a professional soccer player doesn’t work out, 8-year-old Colton Cox said he’d be happy to become a zookeeper or veterinarian when he grows up. But he and his 10-year-old sister, Bella – who wants to open a dog sanctuary – aren’t waiting until they become adults in order to help animals. Ever since they moved into their Tetherow neighborhood roughly three years ago, they’ve decided to do their part to protect the wildlife that frequents the area. And while they may not know it, Bella and Colton are also helping Tetherow accomplish one of its cornerstone objectives: to preserve… Read More

No Bones About It, Tetherow Is Dog Country

Four-Legged Friends Abound Among Our Membership By Yoko Minoura   Bend was crowned “Dog Town USA” by Dog Fancy magazine in 2012 – and it seems that canines (and their human parents) have decided Tetherow is one of the best neighborhoods in town to call home. Several Tetherow members said their dogs seem to have as many, or possibly more, friends – both two- and four‑legged – among the membership as their human counterparts. “If I show up in a lot of the places I frequent in Bend and they don’t see Sarge, that’s the first question,” Member Joe Gallagher said of his service dog. “It’s not, ‘Hey Joe, how are you doing?’ It’s ‘Where’s Sarge?’” Members said their dogs are… Read More

Snow Offers New Recreational Opportunities on the Course

Sledding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing keep members busy By Yoko Minoura   The dramatic topography of Tetherow’s golf course is part of the reason it’s known nationwide among golfers looking for a true links-style experience. But for a certain number of locals, those features are their best under a layer fresh powder. Although 10-year-old Harper Allen said he’s gone sledding on the golf course “a ton,” he and his friend Kellen Rather, also 10, hit the golf course on a sunny December morning shortly before Christmas to hone their skills on freestyle skis. “It’s fun skiing on the golf course, ’cause there’s all these rolling hills,” Harper said. “(There are) small jumps, so you can’t get hurt as easy.” Both he and… Read More

Tetherow’s Ski & Stay Package Will Get You on the Slopes Quicker

We’ve partnered with Mt. Bachelor to offer the best deal around By Yoko Minoura   Most locals will tell you the key to surviving winter in Central Oregon isn’t staying inside the whole time. Instead, the answer is playing in the snow. As often as possible. And there’s no better way to do that than to ski, snowboard or snowshoe at Mt. Bachelor, Bend’s own mountain. The ski resort – which boasts several terrain parks and a tubing hill along with more than 4,300 skiable acres, according to its website – opened for the winter season the day after Thanksgiving. Unlike other ski resorts, Mt. Bachelor does not provide any onsite lodging. Instead, as it has for several years running, it partners… Read More

As a mother, she said she enjoys seeing her children’s excitement and anticipation for Christmas. And as a senior consultant for Beautycounter, she looks forward to Tetherow’s annual holiday bazaar, where she will be among roughly 20 vendors – many of them members – on hand to help guests pick out the perfect gift. “It kicks (the holidays) off, and then you just get excited for everything that’s coming,” Barham said. “I think it’s a highlight up here.” Set for December 15th, the holiday bazaar will take place in the new Event Pavilion at… Read More

End of Golf Season Marks the Start of Brewery Months at The Row

The highly anticipated food and drink specials will change weekly By Yoko Minoura   Activity on the golf course at Tetherow is winding down, but things in The Row restaurant’s kitchen are really heating up. The end of golf season marks the beginning of annual, highly anticipated food and drink specials at The Row. From November through March, the restaurant spotlights one local brewery per month by dedicating three beer taps at the bar and running a rotating menu of roughly five new dishes, changing every one or two weeks, that incorporate beer into the food. This year, the lineup will also include a cider maker. “Everyone loves it,” Tetherow Head Chef Justin Birtola said. “We get people that come… Read More

Golf Season Wrapping Up With Cross Country Golf Day

The first weekend in November marks the end of golf — for now By Nathaniel Kitt   It is truly hard to believe that we only have a few more days of golfing at Tetherow in 2016. But it is the situation we find ourselves in. With that being said, let’s make the very best of what is still here for us. The weather is looking seasonal, and the course is playing wonderfully still! With this past weekend’s inaugural Death Row in the history books and our annual Cross Country Golf day upcoming, there are quite literally still hundreds of golfers taking advantage of playing opportunities! About a month ago, two members emailed me with the subject line, “Death row… Read More

There’s Still Plenty of Golf Left to Play at Tetherow

The season may be winding down, but exciting golf events remain on the horizon. By Nathaniel Kitt   The leaves have fallen and the nights are cooler. Welcome to October in the High Desert! Although snow might start flurrying at higher elevations, there is still plenty of golf left to be played this autumn. Hopefully, one or more of the upcoming golf events entices you to come on out and enjoy the course a few more times. October 4th marked the second annual Breast Cancer Awareness golf event. In a simple effort to raise awareness and support those currently or having previously fought breast cancer, we played nine holes, had lunch and enjoyed a great day of camaraderie. The ever-popular… Read More

Tetherow’s New Event Pavilion Will Host Weddings, Parties and More

The new space will create opportunities for lots of fun By Yoko Minoura   Last year, a Tetherow member’s Christmas celebration took place in the golf shop; a few months later, a beer pong tournament for members was shoehorned into the golf cart storage barn. The July opening of the new Event Pavilion, a 3,600-square-foot event space, will hopefully alleviate the space pinch. While the new pavilion is already in use as a wedding venue, the building will also host corporate events, fundraisers and gatherings of all types. “We tried to create opportunities,” Project Manager Erin van der Velde said. “We don’t even know yet what the possibilities are, and that’s what’s going to be fun.” The pavilion, which is attached to Tetherow’s… Read More

A Dog’s Perspective: The Tetherow Experience

“I bet all my buddies at the dog park will be jealous when I tell them about the great trip I had!” By Yoko Minoura I graduated puppy obedience where I learned to walk on a leash, I’ve gotten comfortable with my crate and have received all my shots, so Mom and Dad said I’m ready to travel with them. WOOF! They said we’re going to a place called Bend, Oregon – awarded “Dog Town, USA” by Dog Fancy magazine in 2012. Sounds like my kind of place. First, we stopped at Tetherow, where we’ll be spending a few nights. Mom put my leash on and let me join her in the lobby to check in, where I was able… Read More

Tetherow is Expanding Its Bike Trail System

“Just walk out your driveway and hop on the trail…” By Yoko Minoura Bend’s annual Blitz bike race is likely the only time mountain bikes are ever allowed on a golf course. But Tetherow – host to the “Big Air” stage of the race – has created several new trails around the property to allow bikers and hikers to enjoy the southwest Bend area and the Deschutes National Forest beyond. “One of the coolest things about Tetherow is we want people to enjoy the natural beauty,” Tetherow General Manager Chris van der Velde said. Tetherow is bordered on the east by Alpine Park – an undeveloped area owned by the Bend Park and Recreation District – and on the west… Read More
