No. 57 of “Best Courses you can Play” for 2023-2024.

A mixture of fine fescue and Colonial Bentgrass. Fine fescue includes Chewings fescue and Creeping Red fescue. Only a dozen or so clubs in the U.S. have such a unique grass mixture. Our bunker sand is from the coastal town of Florence, Oregon, not shipped in from Utah or Idaho.

Our snack shack is located between holes 9 and 10 and offers a delicious variety of fresh items and adult beverages. Tetherow does not have a beverage cart, but drinks can be ordered at the snack shack or delivered on course. Per OLCC rules, golfers cannot bring their own alcohol to the golf course.

The general timeline for course availability is April 1 to Nov. 1. When we close in November, we perform scheduled maintenance including a heavy topdressing and spraying fungicides. These practices allow for consistent playing conditions during the playing season as well as protect against vulnerability during the cold months. The amount of this sand topdressing disallows play in the early spring which additionally gives the fescue grasses a longer time of recuperation from the traffic and play the previous season. Unlike other courses in the area that may open earlier than us, we have a more consistent playing condition for the months we are open.

With influences of David McLay Kidd and his usage of naturally rolling terrain, a genuine Scottish links-style course is very uncommon in the U.S., let alone in the high desert with Cascade views. All of these factors, with the addition of the fescue grass mixture, lead to a facility that is truly unlike any other. Playing links-style golf is traditionally done near seaside locations, but Kidd was able to have a vision that reminded him of a childhood dreamland. Most other courses in the area use either a Creeping Bentgrass or Kentucky Bluegrass grass mixture – which allows for softer playing conditions. With fescue, the grass doesn’t require as much water or fertilizer and can withstand a playing condition which is very firm and fast (ideal for links-style play).

It all depends. We have different rates for guests of our members, guests staying on property, and the general public. Green fees range from $90 to $265.
