Did You Know
DarkSky Oregon
With 80% of the U.S. population unable to view the Milky Way from their homes because of light pollution, Oregon’s dark skies are an increasingly rare treasure. DarkSky Oregon officially launched in August 2019 with a mission to preserve Oregon's magnificent dark skies and to diminish light pollution for the health, safety, and well-being of all life. Life on Earth evolved under a regular cycle of dark nights and bright days--a rhythm that is encoded in the DNA of all living things. We need light at night for human activity, but poorly designed artificial light at night is a wasteful pollutant and has serious impacts on natural ecosystems and on our own human health. Support DarkSky Oregon by attending our Mega Star solar gazing experience every other Thursday.
About Grant Tandy
Growing up in Central Oregon fueled Grant's lifelong fascination with astronomy. For the past decade, his professional focus and personal mission have been on public education. His goal is to demystify the complexities of astronomy, guiding all curious individuals through unwieldy concepts. In 2014, he began as an Astronomical Interpreter at the Oregon Observatory. Beginning in 2017, he served as observatory manager, overseeing educational programming at the Hopservatory. Grant is also a NASA-JPL Solar System Ambassador and has made contributions as a flagship member of DarkSky Oregon. Photography has become another means for Grant to capture and convey the allure of nocturnal landscapes and the natural world, allowing him to share these moments in a tangible manner.
